Question #1: What do you notice about Jesus’ response in each of these three situations? Record your observations below.

John passage:

Luke passage:

Matthew passage:

Question #2: How do these three stories connect to Jesus’ statement from Luke 4:18-19?

Justice means SEEING people as God sees them. In all of these stories, we see Jesus interacting with the poor. We learn the man by the pool had been cast out by his community for thirty-eight years. He was discouraged and cast aside even by others who were in desperate positions. Most people probably wouldn’t even have noticed him. But Jesus saw this man through God’s eyes. Jesus saw a child of God, made in his image. He saw a human being full of value, dignity and faith.

In the second story, Jesus tells the Pharisees to think about people in need as if they were members of their household: “If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?” Similarly, in the story of the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus saw the crowd of thousands who needed healing and “had compassion on them.” He saw them as precious people God had made.

If we are to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and love people as Jesus loved them, we also need to be able to recognize them through God’s eyes, as people extremely precious, valuable and loved by their Creator. We must not see people as society sees them, but as Jesus sees them.

Question #3: Who are the people who are viewed as “the least of these” in your community or society? What social barriers make it difficult for people in your community to help those in need?
